About

Q: What is your name?

A: I go by Blandis on the internet.

Q: What is "Silk and Shears?"

A: Silk and Shears is primarily a sewing/alterations service. It is also the name I chose as my brand and blog title!

Q: What do you do?

A: I mostly repair/alter other people's clothes, but I sometimes take commissions for custom-made garments or home decor. Someday I hope to expand this service into a brand and open up a design studio in a bigger city for me to launch my own designer collections within the brand!

Q: Is there anything else you do besides tailoring?

I've actually thought about dabbling into making BJD (Ball-Jointed Doll) dresses, specifically catering to those more into Lolita fashion or Gothic/Victorian/Rococo style dresses. Hopefully with enough practice and with a high enough demand, I could get that going someday!

I also like to design and make my own Lolita dresses and accessories in my spare time!

Q: What made you want to start sewing as work?

I have always been into cute and elegant clothes and those sorts of things ever since childhood. I started hand sewing in 5th grade and took fashion design classes in high school. I got the idea to start a business when I was struggling to find work during college.
I was lent a sewing machine from my best friend's mother when she found that I could be able to fix other people's clothes.
I feel very confident and focused when I sew because it's what I love to do, even though it is a lot of work!
When I got better at sewing, I decided to launch a service! I created a business card first, with a couple of rough drafts to begin with. Later when I finalized my card, I created a Facebook page, an Instagram, and then this blog to promote my tailoring service, as well as have a bigger presence within the Lolita fashion community!

I feel very grateful that I can do what I enjoy as a service for everyone!

Q: You mention Lolita fashion a lot. What is Lolita fashion?

Lolita fashion is a street fashion from Japan that began in the late 1980's to early 1990's during their Gothic and Punk revolution. It was inspired by fashion from the Romantic period, the Victorian Era, and the French Rococo period. A few notable Lolita fashion brands include Angelic Pretty, Metamorphose Temps de Fille, and my all-time favorite, BABY THE STARS SHINE BRIGHT (BTSSB).
I got into the fashion close to my sophomore year of high school when I took a club trip to San Francisco and stumbled upon BTSSB's store in the Japantown by complete accident! From there, I was hooked onto lace, frills, bows, and headdresses!

Q: Are you going to school for fashion design right now?

I am going to community college right now, but not for fashion design, for Office Technology.
Although, I one day hope to attend FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) and work my way into becoming a fashion designer!
